Most commercial vehicles are designed to carry goods safely from one location to another. For temperature-controlled deliveries, however, the vehicle must also maintain the right internal conditions throughout the journey.
This refrigerated vehicle was a relatively unusual project for Charnwood Commercial Bodies at the time. Rather than producing one of the company’s established lightweight body designs, the team was asked to create a specialist vehicle capable of keeping its contents cool while in transit.
As a one-off build, the project presented new challenges and provided a valuable learning opportunity for everyone involved. Refrigerated bodies require different materials, construction methods and equipment from conventional commercial vehicles, with careful consideration needed to reduce heat transfer and protect the temperature-controlled load area.
The completed vehicle demonstrated Charnwood’s ability to apply its design and manufacturing experience to a more specialised brief. It also provided the team with knowledge that could be used to develop further refrigerated vehicles and expand this area of the company’s work.
Projects of this kind are a good example of the flexibility involved in commercial vehicle body building. Different businesses have very different operational requirements, and an effective vehicle needs to be designed around the work it will carry out rather than simply following a standard specification.
For temperature-controlled transport operators, this means considering the required internal temperature, the type of goods being carried, the vehicle’s daily routes and how products will be loaded and unloaded. These factors all influence the finished body and the refrigeration equipment needed to create a practical working vehicle.
Although this particular fridge van was something of a rarity for Charnwood at the time, it marked the beginning of an important area of development for the company. Charnwood now manufactures both refrigerated and freezer vehicles as a standard part of its commercial body range, providing temperature-controlled solutions for a variety of businesses and applications.
What began as an unfamiliar one-off project helped Charnwood broaden its capabilities and develop the experience needed to serve the temperature-controlled transport market. It also reflects the company’s willingness to take on new challenges and turn specialist customer requirements into practical, dependable commercial vehicles.
